Welcome to the Centre for Global Citizenship Education & Research.

Global citizenship education scholarship critically deals with all aspects of social, educational, cultural, political and economic development of societies. With a vision to create a comprehensive understanding of the research and dissemination of global citizenship education project that enhances and sustains basic citizenship rights for all people, the Centre for Global Citizenship Education & Research (CGCER) is an exciting initiative in the Department of Educational Policy Studies. The concept of global citizenship suggests the development of global citizens who have a set of knowledges, skills and attitudes that make it possible for them to be actively involved in local, national and global institutions and systems that directly or indirectly affect their lives.

  1. CGCER 2017 International Conference: Call for Proposals

    Call for Proposals for CGCER 2017 International Conference - Global Citizenship: Intersectionality, Solidarity and Living as Kin on a Suffering Planet on October 26-28, 2017. Deadline for submissions is May 15, 2017.

  3. Public Lecture by Dr Catherine Odora Hoppers: July 21, 2016 from 2:00 - 4:00PM

    CGCER invites academics, university staff, community members, researchers, policy makers, educators and students to a free public lecture by renowned academic Dr. Catherine Odora Hoppers (South African Research Chair in Development Education) on "Indigenous Knowledge Systems & the transformation of universities: Systemic starting points" on July 21, 2016 from 2:00 - 4:00PM in Education South 165.   4. Global Citizenship Summer Institute 2016: August 16-17, 2016

    The Edmonton Regional Learning Consortium (ERLC), in partnership with the Centre for Global Citizenship Education and Research (CGCER) and ACGC is offering a two-day institute titled Becoming Ethical and Engaged Citizens in a Globalized World: A Path Towards Global Citizenship on August 16-17, 2016, through a grant from Alberta Education.

  5. Symposium on International Education: Meeting the Needs of International, Refugee, and Newcomer Students in Alberta

    The symposium will be on March 2, 2016. Its purpose is to bring together those involved in research, practice and policy related to international education and the education of international, refugee, and newcomer students in Alberta. Vision Statement

Through research, education and action, the Centre for Global Citizenship Education and Research heightens consciousness and understanding of issues of global citizenship education in order to contribute to the collective development of societies that provide basic social justice and human rights. In achieving this, the University of Alberta community of researchers, students and partners plays a critical role in harnessing and advancing this vision.
